MapAlerter.com
Office Location: Co. Kilkenny, Ireland
Employee Numbers: 3
Website: www.mapalerter.com

MapAlerter.com is a cloud service designed to make communications easier for Irish local authorities. The public can sign up to get free alerts for their local area and messages are sent to them through a variety of delivery channels such as SMS, email, chat apps, social media and smartphone apps. MapAlerter was launched during 2011 and is used every day by Irish Councils to keep the public informed about events taking place in their local area. Typical alerts include water disruptions, road diversions, community alerts and local planning notices. However, the best use of MapAlerter is during severe weather events when the system is used to send out alerts about fallen trees, icy conditions, gritting updates, spot flooding, and rising river levels. The MapAlerter service was successfully used during Storm Ophelia to power the communications strategy of many local authorities, maintaining a 100% service uptime record throughout the increased demand. A major benefit for the public is that each alert processed by MapAlerter is geographically focused. When subscribers sign up they must provide the locations that interest them. Meanwhile, when Councils issue alerts they must define an "alert zone" on the map. MapAlerter joins the dots and ensures that only the correct audience will ever receive an alert. This cuts out the noise and ensures that subscribers only ever get pinged for incidents that actually affect them.

The Business Informatics Group (BIG) is a jung and innovative research group at Dublin City University, School of Computing. The research of the BIGroup focuses on various topics around Business Informatics, which is at the conjunction of Information and Communications Technology, Software Engineering and Business Studies. The underlying concept of business informatics forms a coherent methodological approach, which provides synergistic benefits that arise when business concepts are integrated with computing technologies and software engineering principles. Guided by engineering principles, transformation processes are implemented through a methodological approach. Indeed the holistic and methodological approach based on engineering principles is central to business informatics, which can be summarized as a socio-technological and business-oriented subject with engineering penetration. Business informatics takes an active role in aligning strategy, processes and information technology. This principle provides a systematic design and construction of enterprise information and communication systems. The systems are described by architectures on various levels. Within this framework, our research in Business Informatics focuses on Information Systems Architectures and Business Processes, by which we aim to create, apply and validate models and methodologies (architectures) for increasing the value proposition of information.
